A thread insert is a fastener component that can be used as an alternative to cutting threads into a material. These components can be molded into place when an object is created or installed after the fact. Thread inserts can be screwed or pressed into blank holes bored into the object to be threaded. A thread insert's simple purpose is to allow a stud or bolt to be screwed into place. Thread inserts can be installed into existing objects or used to repair damaged threads. It is commonplace to secure thread inserts with epoxy. When inserts are glued or fixed into place with epoxy, they are seldom removed. For this reason, it is important to use a material that will stand the test of time.
Unlike stainless steel and other less noble metals, titanium thread inserts will not rust or corrode over time. Titanium's resistance to corrosion and amazing strength-to-weight ratio is the reason it has become the chosen metal for the aerospace and underwater exploration industries. Any place a fastener is used in harsh conditions, such as an oil rig, space shuttle or deep ocean power generation plant, titanium can be found.
Titanium thread inserts are not only stronger and corrosion resistant, they also weigh nearly half as much as stainless steel. The weight savings on a single insert may not seem like a lot, however when hundreds or thousands of inserts are used, the weight savings cannot be denied. Though these simple inserts can be found to be made from many different materials, none can claim to be as strong, as light, or as corrosion resistant as titanium. |
